Elon Musk shows off the shiny SpaceX Starship Starhopper is undergoing tests with a single Raptor engine attached underneath it at SpaceX’s facility in Boca Chica, Texas. The hopper first fired up on April 3. The tethered prototype isn’t meant to reach space. Musk’s declaration that Starhopper hit the end of its tether indicates the second hop was likely higher than the first. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s key ministers are in “transformation mode”, so to speak. First, it was Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, who talked last Thursday while presenting the Railway Budget for FY2017 of seven missions to transform the world’s fourth-largest rail network. On Monday, it was Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s turn, as he laid out the broad contours for Budget 2016-17, which he said were meant to “transform India” next fiscal. The all-encompassing nine pillars covered almost everything under the sun — from agriculture, social sector spending, education and infra spending, to financial sector reforms, tax reforms and fiscal discipline. AgricultureAllocation for farmers’ welfare was set at Rs 35,984 crore. A long-term irrigation fund will be set up with an initial corpus of Rs 20,000 crore. In case of crop loss, farmers will be compensated with nominal premium and the highest ever compensation under the PM’s Crop Insurance Scheme (PM Fasal Bima Yojana).Rural thrust Allocation to the PM’s Rural Roads Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana) will be increased to Rs 19,000 crore. Grants to gram panchayats will see a quantum jump of 228 percent in accordance with FFC recommendations. A 100 villages will be electrified by May 1, 2018. In totality, Rs 87,765 crore will be spent on rural development in FY2017.Social-sector spending A new healthcare scheme will provide health cover of up to Rs 1 lakh per family. Senior citizens will get additional healthcare cover of up to Rs 30,000. Besides, 300 generic drug stores will be opened.Education, skills, and job creation A new scheme of Rs 500 crore has been launched to promote ventures by ST/SC communities. Ten educational institutions in public and private sector each will be made world-class. A digital literacy scheme will be launched to cover rural households. The main objective will be to skill 1 core youths under the PM Kaushal-Vikas Yojana.Infrastructure and investmentThe total infrastructre outlay for FY2016-17 now stands at Rs 2,21,246 crore. For development of highways, Rs 55,000 crore has been allocated.Financial sector reformsThe biggest reform announced in the budget is the amendment to the Reserve Bank of India Act to “provide statutory basis for a Monetary Policy Framework and a Monetary Policy Committee through the Finance Bill 2016.” Besides, Jaitley also proposed to set up a Financial Data Management Centre under the Financial Stability Development Council to “facilitate integrated data aggregation and analysis in the financial sector.”Tax reforms for easier complianceThe ceiling of income tax rebate under Section 87A for taxpayers up to Rs 5 lakh annual income will be raised to Rs 5,000 from Rs 2,000. This would benefit approximately 1 crore tax payers. Deduction under HRA will be raised from Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000 per annum. The other two pillars as articulated by Jaitley include fiscal discipline and ease of doing business.

The Meghalayan Age covers the time span from 2200 BCE up till the present. Prior to this summer, it had been generally referred to as the late Holocene period. The group chose the starting point of the age as approximately 4200 years ago because prior evidence has shown that was the beginning of a mega-drought. Middleton does not dispute this claim, but focuses on other statements made by members of the group that proposed the change. In their presentation, they noted that the mega-drought resulted in the collapse of a number of civilizations—in Greece, Mesopotamia, Syria, Egypt, Palestine, the Yangtze River Valley and the Indus Valley. This last one was particularly significant because the new age was named for a state in what is now India—Meghalaya. Middleton claims that there is no real evidence of mass civilizations collapsing. He suggests that at most, there was restructuring of several societies due to the drought. He further suggests that because of this inaccuracy, it is inappropriate to use the date chosen as a meaningful threshold for a new geologic age. He adds that he believes that such errors crop up due to a lack of communication between archaeologists and historians—a problem that could be solved with more interdisciplinary collaborations.Such statements have angered some of the people who proposed the labeling of the new age, according to Robinson Meyer, in a column for The Atlantic. He claims a squabble has arisen due to the piece Middleton published. He writes that some of the Meghalayan group have even gone so far as to question Middleton’s credentials, calling him a “failed archeology Ph.D.” Others have suggested that the claims by Middleton were poorly researched and are misleading. In his Perspective piece published in the journal Science, he claims that evidence of widespread collapse of civilizations following the onset of a mega-drought in 2200 BCE, is lacking. When the entire country celebrated 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) decided to celebrate it totally in a different but unique way befitting Gandhi’s vision of empowering villagers. While inaugurating a two days workshop-cum-training programme named ‘Technology for Modern Pottery’ at Bishampur village of Sewapuri in Varanasi district on December 21, KVIC Chairman Vinai Kumar Saxena said that in a joint effort of highly skilled 150 potters from all over the country to give a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, the commission has decided to make 150 square meters (15 meters long by 10 meters wide) wall mural, using ‘chai kulhad’. “While each chai kulhad will be one pixel of the entire image, small terracotta parts will come together to form the entire image. As this mural will become a finite entity formed by a simple unit of larger generality, the KVIC will showcase it at some prominent place in New Delhi,” he said. Saxena revealed that KVIC has already started identifying potters from different parts of the country to produce the chai kulhads for this very purpose. He also informed that as India has a great pottery tradition and different parts of the country has diverse techniques of clay production – the selected potters will produce the kulhads in stipulated size, shape and finish them with their respective techniques. An Ahmedabad-based firm the ‘Clay Club’, which specialises in terracotta and ceramic products will design the artwork and will manage the production by engaging with the identified potters. To make the life of mural long and all weatherproof, these Kullad will be glazed and baked in high temperature at Morbi in Gujarat, which is world famous terracotta and glazed clay articles. KVIC has so far in this financial year distributed 4700 electric potter wheels in different parts of the country and has planned to distribute additional 7000 Electric potter wheels by March 31, 2019.

December 6, 2016 Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Web giants YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Microsoft will step up efforts to remove extremist content from their websites by creating a common database. The companies will share “hashes” — unique digital fingerprints they automatically assign to videos or photos — of extremist content they have removed from their websites to enable their peers to identify the same content on their platforms.”We hope this collaboration will lead to greater efficiency as we continue to enforce our policies to help curb the pressing global issue of terrorist content online,” the companies said in a statement on Tuesday.Tech companies have long resisted outside intervention in how their sites should be policed, but have come under increasing pressure from Western governments to do more to remove extremist content following a wave of militant attacks.YouTube and Facebook have begun to use hashes to automatically remove extremist content. But many providers have relied until now mainly on users to flag content that violates terms of service. Flagged material is then individually reviewed by human editors who delete postings found to be in violation.Twitter suspended 235,000 accounts between February and August this year and has expanded the teams reviewing reports of extremist content. Each company will decide what image and video hashes to add to the database and matching content will not be automatically removed, they said. The database will be up and running in early 2017 and more companies could be brought into the partnership. The European Union set up an EU Internet Forum last year bringing together the internet companies, interior ministers and the EU Counter-Terrorism Coordinator to find ways of removing extremist content. The Forum will meet again on Thursday, when ministers are expected to ask the companies about their efforts and helping to provide evidence to convict foreign fighters.(Reporting by Julia Fioretti; editing by John Stonestreet)
Travelweek Group Thursday, February 21, 2019 << Previous PostNext Post >> Share TORONTO — In its 20-year history, soft adventure specialist On The Go Tours has never had a North America office – until now.Opening this summer in Toronto, the brand new office will be headed by Mike Quinto, General Manager-North America, who’ll lead a six-member team that will work with travel agents to increase the U.K.-based company’s visibility in the North American market.Quinto, who spoke exclusively with Travelweek alongside Hollie Youlden, On The Go’s Marketing Manager, said that opening a Canadian office was pivotal to the company’s growth, particularly in light of the numbers coming out of Canada.“Canada is a stronger market for us than the U.S.,” he said, adding that reps have been in Canada for the past 10 years compared to just the past six months in the United States. “North Americans like to deal with North Americans. Plus, the new office will help with the challenge of working in different time zones. Now, we’ll be able to help North American agents in real time and answer their calls immediately.”So who is On The Go Tours? With the company expected to make its presence known even further in Canada, agents should know the following:They go all over the world. On The Go Tours has grown immensely since its inception 20 years ago. Starting with just Egypt tours, the company now offers 60 destinations around the world. Egypt remains its top-selling destination, but watch out for emerging hotspots like Sri Lanka and returning favourites like Turkey, which Youlden says is “coming back in a big way.”More news: Air Canada’s global sales update includes Managing Director, Canada & USA SalesThey know how to do soft adventure. Its guided small-group tours take travellers to some of the world’s most remote places, and include such high-thrill activities like camel trekking in Morocco, bike riding in Cambodia, and felucca sailing down the Nile.Camel trekking in MoroccoIt has five product ranges.Signature Range: ‘Exciting days and comfortable nights’ featuring 3- to 4-star accommodation, English-speaking local guides (in Egypt, groups are led by highly-trained Egyptologists), and a maximum group size of 24Budget Range: Similar to Signature but with less inclusions and a lower price pointHandpicked Range: While its Signature tours are all operated by On The Go, Handpicked tours work with local operators as a nod to sustainable tourismActive: Off-the-beaten track tours that include walking, trekking or cyclingIndependent: FIT private itineraries for clients who want all the details taken care of but do not want to travel in a groupTheir target demographic may surprise you.Despite its reputation for being a soft adventure specialist, On The Go sells mostly to an older clientele. Its core demographic for its most popular product range (Signature) is 35-50 year olds, and even older among North Americans (45-60).They can customize.Knowing that more seasoned travellers don’t necessarily want to ‘rough it’ all the time, Quinto noted that on most tours, upgrades are available to enhance comfort. For example, while on one of the Vietnam itineraries, clients can forego an overnight sleeper train and upgrade to a flight for an additional $300, while on the best-selling King Ramses tour in Egypt, a two-night felucca sailing can be upgraded to a four-star river cruise up the Nile for an extra $450.Abu Simbel TempleThey just launched tours to the Baltics.More news: Onex paying big to get WestJet and that will send airfares soaring, says CWTIn response to a growing demand for ‘off-the-beaten-track’ destinations, the company has launched four new tours to Latvia, Estonia, Poland and Lithuania, with departure dates running from March 2019 through to September. These include the eight-day ‘Highlights of the Baltics’, which visits Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn; the eight-day ‘Baltic Capitals Explorer’, which takes in the highlights of the Baltic capitals plus the seaside town of Klaipeda; the 10-day ‘Best of the Baltics’, which includes Lahemaa National Park and Rundale Palace; and the 12-day ‘Poland and Baltic Discover’, which visits Krakow, Warsaw and more. They can’t wait to work with Canadian agents.According to Quinto, agents can expect a North American ‘blitz’ this year that includes a grand opening party in Toronto this summer. Knowing full well how important front-line agents are to the business, Quinto is also reminding them of On The Go’s ‘Sell 4, Go For Free’ program, which runs until March 31, 2019. When agents sell four tours, they’ll earn a free tour to one of the company’s six top destinations: Egypt, Jordan, China, Turkey, Sri Lanka and India. For more information go to onthegotours.com.
